Our Story

Abacus was founded in 1987 by Jonathan Cieszinski, P.E., R.P.L.S. Jon first was introduced to Land Surveying when he was hired as a Chainman for the City of Dallas Water Department in 1972. Jon worked for the City for about a year and a half. Most of this time was spent doing "creek jobs". A "creek job" was the process of meandering, the creeks and performing topographic surveying to provide the Engineers with the necessary information to plan the infrastructure for future development. Jon enrolled in North Texas State University and began going to school part-time while at the same time working for various surveying firms in the Metroplex area. In 1976 Jon ended up in Lubbock and for the next several years attended Texas Tech while working as a Crew Chief for a local Surveying Firm. After graduating from Tech, Jon obtained registration as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor and a Professional Engineer. In 1987 he founded Abacus Engineering Surveying.

In 2025, after 38 years of leadership, Jon retired and transitioned ownership of the firm to Zachary Wells.

Zach began his surveying career with Abacus in 2016, working as a field helper while attending engineering school at night. Over the years, he progressed through every level of the profession from helper to crew chief to CAD draftsman, field coordinator, and project manager gaining experience across the Lubbock area in multiple industries. In 2024, Zach returned to Abacus and achieved professional licensure, earning his first license in Arizona, followed by Texas and Colorado in 2025. He is among less than 40 others licensed in Texas before the age of 30, let alone multiple states.

Today, under Zach’s leadership, Abacus continues to provide high-quality land surveying services throughout the South Plains and Lubbock region, combining decades of experience with a forward looking approach to technology, efficiency, and client service.
